It depends on what you want from a bank - internet or High Street? I haven't banked on the High Street in years but when I did I was very happy with HSBC or the Co-Op (ethical banking). If you're into your internet banking I would definately recomend SMILE (www.smile.co.uk) - great customer service, ethical, good interest rates and no silly charges. If SMILE doesn't float your boat, then First Direct (HSBC) would be the next best or even Cahoot.

I've been with the Co-op for years now...brilliant service and extremely helpful !!! Barclays and Lloyds left much to be desired....Bank of Scotland was good too. Dad is with The Ing Bank..they give great rates.

My preference here in the UK would be HSBC. I left them to go to Alliance and Leicester and have regretted it ever since. Also HSBC are a major international chain so you can find their banks worldwide and they're always so helpful and friendly.

I like HSBC because the services they offer just suit me

HBOS were not able to offer me anything enticing

RBOS were good, but a little limited; I grew out of them

I would put Lloyd TSB in 2nd place, but I chose my HSBC account instead

The best would be a credit union, as they have a lot less fees and rates on loans
