Norton Ghost is great IF all computers are the same make and model. I assume that this is not the case.
1. Desktop Audit- Audit all PC's-Software and hardware.
2. Results- Who can be upgraded to XP? Who needs hardware upgrades? How many machines are standard and can be imaged?
4. Get in hardware upgrades
5. Working on data results, develop a project plan ( I went department to department)
6. MINIMUM downtime!
Things to consider!
1. User profiles
2. Data stored on the PC and not the network
3. How many machines are standard and can be imaged.
4. Developing a baseline image that all users have on site.
5. Using the image to deployment then adding on the extras gathered from data analysis. i.e 2 users have MS project etc....
6. Consider using temporary machines for users to use while current workstations are being upgraded. Avoiding staff twiddling thumbs!
7. Communication! I put a project plan out side the canteen. I also had a liason in each department who were briefed on the project and updated on a regular basis.

Just a few thoughts.....

Symantec Ghost will be your best friend! If the machines are all the same then here is my opinion. I worked at a state university for several years and this is the method we used. Take one computer and install windows and the software that it needs. Then using ghost and any number of the methods available create an image file of that computer. Next you can copy that image to any computer in a matter of minutes so that you have a computer that is ready to go. Also if you have a software failure with a machine and the user data is backed up all you have to do is reimage the machine. You can also use Sysprep to get a nice setup screen similar to something you would get when you first turn on a new Dell Computer. Good Luck and let me know if there are any specific questions that I can help you with!
