The port I pluged the flash drive into usually connects my ipod up to my PC just fine. What gives with either of my front 2 usb ports on my PC being power surged by the usb flash drive? Also I am using a usb extention cable too for easier port access does the extra cable decrese my performace too?.

All of the USB devices that you have connected to the USB hub are drawing too much power -- more power than what your USB hub can provide.

You have 2 choices: 1) remove some USB devices to free up power. 2) make sure that your USB hub has its own power cable conencted to a power outlet -- this will most likely fix your power problem.

If your USB hub does not offer the option to plug it into a power outlet, you may want to consider purchasing one that does.

I would try to plug in other USB devices to the front ports to see if they power surge. There is no good reason, unless the 8GB USB drive has an external power supply, you should be seeing a power surge. All USB is on a +5V and GND system, and unless you reverse the two, you should never see a power surge.

As far as the extension cable goes, USB1.1 was rated at 10 feet. This means from the source to the destination, there should only be (at a max) 10 feet of cable. After this, it will cause data loss/corruption. USB2.0 is rated at 16 feet. Even with these ratings, the longer the cable, the slower the throughput because you have to transmit the voltage differentials over a longer area (basically low is 0 and high is 1).

I'm not sure I understand your question correctly.

If you have problems with power surges buy a surge protector.

A USB extension cable won't decrease performance unless it is over 5m long (which it won't be).
