Ian Fleming had James Bond drinking many different beverages. Albert Broccoli, who started the James Bond films started Bond drinking vodka martinis. Most likely Smirnoff paid Broccoli Productions to advertise their brand.

Dr. No. In the 1962 film "Dr. No", the villian Dr. No first handed
Sean Connery a vodka martini, shaken but not stirred, which was reputedly made with Smirnoff's vodka. Since then, James Bond has had a contract with Smirnoff and, although not asked for specifically by name in the films, it was always understood to be Smirnoff vodka. (I read this in a review, and I assume they mean the owners of the James Bond movie rights).

The person responsible for selling the ad space in the movies,
gives the names to the producer and he to the director and the director to the actor. Every sign in a window or on a billboard is paid for, if someone is eating a hot dog in the movie your watching and you see the brand name, its been paid for.
Few if any actors have contracts directly with the product manufacture.
