Plug the printer into the laptop.

I am assuming that your printer is connected to your desktop. If that is the case, the only way to print is if your desktop is turned on - as you are using your desktop as the printer server (it needs to be on to work).

There are printers in the market that support wireless printing through Wi-Fi -- that's what I use at home.

You can also get a print server "box" that will act as a server and allow you to print even when your desktop is off.
