It depends on weather it is comedy or drama. For Comedy I like My Name is Earl. That show is hilariously written and acted.Boston Legal is funny too.The Simpsons is the best written animation and comedy.
As for Drama I like CSI, Lost,House, and the new show Brothers and sisters.Heroes has become my favorite this year.
But If you move over from the networks to HBO then You have a lot more flexibility. Because HBO can do what it wants without restrictions and the same old format they tend to break away from the rest. Best Drama the Sopranos, Six feet Under was , but it is over. Sex in the City was a comedy. Big Love is really good. But my favorite new HBO show is Rome. It has great writing and it tells an in depth history of what happened to Rome.

The three shows that have the best writing are South Park, Heroes, and Arrested Development.

South Park. Because under the crudeness, there is more of a moral than any other show on television.

LOST, by far. Very clever, very suspenseful show. They never use cliches; everything connects so much better than other shows make their events connect; and there are so many "smart" book and philosopher references. This is definitely the best written show on tv right now.

The worst show on HBO will blow away anything on network TV. My vote is for the Sopranos.
