Michael Mann, of course. The man (no pun intended) is a genius, both in respect to writing and directing. His masterpiece is undoubtedly, Heat (1995), but I have to admit, it's hard to like one specific Michael Mann film, because to like a Michael Mann film, is to be a fan of his entire filmography. You have to take into account his use of color, location, and angle in each shot. It's hard to also not recognize how much he has a hand in everything within his movies (cinematography, score, stunts, etc.). Watching a Michael Mann film in a movie theater is an experience. The sounds, colors and overall effect are lost in the translation to DVD.

Stanley Kubrick, Its hard to pick one but I would say either Full Metal Jacket or Clockwork Orange, Clockwork Orange... hands down the best movie of all time. Of course Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is great if you lean more to comedy in the cold war.
