No disrespect to any of the other top punk bands listed, but from a strictly musical point of view, The Clash showed genius beyond the confines of straight punk. They had a few songs that to me were duds, but they were able to punkify reggae, punkify good old rockabilly, even punkify jazz! There aren't too many punk bands who had the intellectual depth to write detailed songs about (for instance) the Spanish civil war. I mean, to be punk you don't need much... 3 chords and lots of bitterness... and many punk bands settled for that alone, because they had little more than that in them to offer. The Clash had more than that, and they gave it.
I really liked the Jam, too, I don't see them getting enough votes.

All of the English bands admit they learned how to play by listening to the Ramones!

Personally I like Black Flag. In 'Get in the Van', Rollins writes that Gregg Ginn had written, "the soundtrack for a full scale riot." No joke. The Ramones were great, but no one touched the intensity of the Flag.

I used to divide into categories, but now I'm just gonna say The Velvet Underground, despite that they're technically prepunk.

Not that I dislike the others. In fact, I'm listening to the Buzzcocks right now.
