Ok sweetie then let me school you. Just ask! I'm a black woman and I would prefer to be called a black woman because as I wrote earlier my great great great ancestors are not from Africa. They were from the reservation which makes them Indians. However, because I am of gorgeous mahogany color, I view myself and I am a black woman. You may call me Queen. As in Latifah! LOL! But seriously, you don't have to be nervous or intimidated about us. We can be just a calm and nice as anyone else. Now when I'm in this section (Cultures & Groups) sometimes I tend to get real how shall I put it, ok Ghetto because I have to lay down how I'm feeling when someone is trying to beat me down with words. However, I'm very intelligent, gorgeous, likeable by everyone, and mostly I'm very happy with my life right now. But I will never tolerate the racism not even against you if you were my friend. It's just who I am. Have a good one!

Personally I prefer to be called by my name, other than that Black, Black Native American or American of African and First Nation decent if you must use a caveat.
I know they gentleman named Michael. Micheal is from Zambia in Africa, born there, as I understand so were his parents. Michael is now an American citizen, if anyone is an African-American he is. Oh by the way, Michael is fair skinned, blond haired and blue eyed.
To me an African American is someone who comes from Africa and becomes an American citizen.

Most people I know prefer Black, ofcourse my family is West Indian. Black Americans may feel differently, but all my real African relatives HATE that Americans use African American.
Call 'em black and if they prefer African American, they'll correct you.

I'm white, but I'd like to answer this. In my 5+ decades on this earth they've gone from *****, to Black, to African- American, & now people of color. I am of German descent. As far as everyone in concerned, I am white. I'm not German-American. My white friends are not Scottish-American, Italian American, Swedish American, etc. Also, not all black people in the US are African-American. In FL alone, we have Jamacians, Haitians, Cubans (some are black) Bahamians.etc. Hispanics....Cuban, Puerto Rican, all different parts of S & central Am....American Indians, then native Americans, now want to be defined by their native nation....Cherokee, Mikosukee, Cheyanne, Seminole, etc. Did I answer your question?

No no no. Many people in America are not of African decent. Many are from Jamaica, Cuba and other islands. The term African American is used specifically for those of African ancestry.

We prefer African American. It is wrong because we are not black, we come in all different shades from high yellow to deep dark chocolate., but we aren't black.

To call us Black is ok. Did someone cuss you out for calling them black????lol It's ok.. Black is fine. I've never been offended by it..like several other blacks who have answered your question, none of my ancestors were directly from Africa. I have mostly Irish and Native Indian blood.

It depends who you are referring to.
Some people just don't like to be called black and some other don't like African America.
But for safer, I'd prefer you'd say sir, ma'am, miss and so on
