Hard to say what computers are better. I deal with Dell desktops and HP Compaq laptops. One Dell optiplex series the motherboards would blow there capacitors. As far as Dell making or using there own parts. That is not true. The best thing to do is get a PC magazine. See there reviews. And get at least a 3 year warranty. It will cost you but it will be a life saver. Also just get what you want. If you are just web surfing and basic word or excel. You will not need a so called gaming PC. If you plan on playing games get a gaming PC. Dell makes a great one

Gateway is not doing very well nowadays. I heard service was really bad. Dell and HP are good except Dell like to use their own components as much as possible which makes it hard to buy anything from a shelf and be confident it will work with the machine. Adding internal components is problematic.

Make a list of what you want to be able to do with your new computer, then find computers that are able to perform these tasks, then look at price and other factors which attract you to the computer.I had a gateway and it was very good, my son has a dell and he is ok with it, I now have a Toshiba Satellite laptop and it is awesome. find these computers on-line and see if you can do a side by side comparasion this could help you decide which one to get.Consult the salesperson, hopefully they know their stuff, if not ask for someone who does. Best advice shop around then buy.

Gateway is out...as for the Dell/HP that's up to you. I prefer HP because they do their own research and they are not vendor specific when it comes to add ons...Dells will sometimes need to have the proprietary items in order to work correctly.

My first choice is also an IBM (Lenovo), and second has to go to Hewlitt Packard (not Compaq). Both companies provide superb tech support. Very easy to get "proper" answers.
IBM is relatively easy to repair, thus, less costs in labour. Most parts are interchangeable from other companies. Same with HP.
Compaq is a proprietary system. Most parts to repair or upgrade, will have to be purchased thru them. Higher prices.

I suggest you to use Dell. Why ? Gateway is sucks. HP also, because he merge with Compaq. Now it's quality goes sucks also. If you ask me my best opinion, I Prefer HOME BUILD PC. NOW BRANDED PC. I HATE THEM, WHY ? because it's hard to Upgrade and customize.
Feel free to contact me :)
