I am 11 weeks pregnant and I am having my first doctor's appointment on Thurs. They told me that I won't be getting my first ultrasound until 20 weeks. How will I know that the baby is the right size and that everything is going alright with my pregnancy? What other things do they do to make sure everything is o.k.?

It is very normal not get an ultrasound until you are 20weeks along. The doctor will have you take some blood tests, check your weight, urine and blood pressure. The doctor will also press down on your stomache and can tell if you are progressing as you should. If anything is abnormal, that is when they will do an early ultrasound.

CONGRATS TO YOU!!

They will measure your stomach (actually your uterus)at each visit and they can tell if you are growing as expected for your stage of pregnancy. Your weight will also help them know that the baby is growing. Women don't like to gain weight, but you should gain some weight when your pregnant. They will also be listening to the heartbeat at the visits. I'm sure you'll hear the heartbeat on Thursday. That is so cool. Don't worry. Everything will be fine.

Go to the BabyCenter website. They have a lot of great information that might help answer some of your questions. All of my friends who have had babies use this site.
