Black is considered the absence of color. White is all colors. In other words, white reflects all colors of the visible spectrum, and black reflects none. That's the short, technical answer.

Of course, if you ask Crayola, they're gonna' tell you that white and black are colors.

Technically, when talking about light, black is the absence of colour and white is all the colours in the spectrum combined. When talking about paint, though (or crayon, etc.), white is considered white and black is considered black, and then any colour with white is considered a tint, and any colour with black is considered a shade. And it is really not possible to create a true black or true white paint (or crayon, etc.) because we can see that it is really just slightly off. Most people would say they are colours, because when you open a box of crayons, there they are. In other words, it really depends on what you are talking about, and how exact you need to get.

A note ... Yes black is absence of color , except there is a little detail
that we have solid colors the ones we paint with , and there is the colors that emanate from white light refraction , that is that the white light color contains the color spectrum , if you mix all the illuminated colors , of the primary ones , it will turn into white , this wont happen if you mix the same solid colors you paint with , it will turn into a dark ugly Brown /blackish mess. The paint-able material white and black are colors , but not in the light spectrum.

Being an ART student, I know that black and white are not part of the color wheel but are TONE VALUES, gray too.You use blk and wht to either darken or lighten a color. Adding wht to colors is called a 'tint'. ex: wht + red= light red, not pink.
Colors that have black added to it are called 'shades.' ex: blk + red= drk red.

That should asnwer your question! ^_^

no they are not, black is the positive of all colors and white of course is the absence of all color. how on earth could black be the absence of color??? come on people. you have to mix all colors to get a true black, why because it contains all color of the spectrum. can some one give me the formulae for mixing white???? no you can't it doesn't exist.

no, they are more like shades to a color. If you have a red you can make it dark red until you hit black (or the absence of red) or go to a lighter red and hit white (add all color to it).

Then there is gradients, tones, luminance...
