Go to your local library and use the miropheshe (pronounced micro-feesh). They will have all old newspaper copies that you can search through.
Good Luck!

This depends upon what you know about the person.
If you know the date and the city of residence, simply go to the local newspaper, and look through the obituaries during that time period.
At public libraries, there are annual publications called street indexes, as well as reverse telephone indexes. Street indexes have alphabetical listings of residents for towns. If you know the person's name and town, simply refer to each listing until you find the last index in which they were listed. Now you know the year they died. Many libraries also have archives of newspapers, and you can search this, either electronically, or by reading thru the microfilms.
If you now the person's name only, and the state where they lived, you can find the public record of their death in the Vital Statistics office of the state government. From the death certificate, you can then find more detailed information from obituaries, since the death certificate will provide the date and location of death.
There are numerous online resources which may be helpful, though these are all typically pay services and their data bases are not necessarily complete.
If you know the person's home town, but not their date of death, you can find information at the town hall too. Voter registries, land tax records, etc... all have public information. If the person in question owned a house, local public records will show you the last date they paid taxes or were registered to vote. From this, you get a more specific date, which would enable you to look in newpaper archives more specifically.
The best place to look, if you only have a person's name, is to go to the Vital Statistics Office of your state, and then proceed from there with that information.
