here is a random idea...... You know when you wake up in the morning, and you're having a shower, and suddenly you get sucked into the shower hole and you find yourself working in a deserted bar in the middle of the ocean with a drunken princess and a gay dragon, and the only boat that can take you back home has your ex's bra attached to it as a white flag, and a chain-smoking monkey is the Capitan and he only speaks Spanish and the only translator in the area is always busy watching Big Brother at the same time that you need him?

Write about what you know, and stuff that is familiar to you, such as things that have happened to you in your past, and situations you are going through now. For example, my favourite authour from my childhood, Judy Blume, writes a lot of stories, from a child's point of view, about the break-up of their parents. Whilst she was going through a divorce, she encouraged her children to talk about how they were feeling, and based her stories on their thoughts and feelings. She also based some of her books (e.g 'Starring Sally J Freedman as Herself') on things that really happened to her during her childhood.
If there is a subject you are particularly interested in, like for example, you want to write a story that happens during Victorian times, then do your research on those times to get your story accurate. An extreme example of research was Irvine Welsh actually hanging around with drug addicts (though not actually taking drugs!) to come up for characters and stories in 'Trainspotting.' I think he actually was associated with drugs counsellors rather than the addicts, though.
If you are a fan of any particular film, book, TV series or even videogame, you could try writing a story based upon the characters, also known as fanfiction, and then submit them to sites such as fanfiction.net. This is sometimes seen as kind of a nerdy thing to do (what the heck! I do it! :P) but it will give you practice writing good scenarios, and you won't have to develop your characters, as your readers will already know who you are talking about, and what their character is like.
In any case, good luck! :)

you can't force this sort of thing. you need to just relax & read some other stories. soon enough the motivations will come to you.
