get a nintendo wii when it comes out in a few days. the us release date is november 19. it is backwards compatible with all gamecube games and the controller is perfect for kids! it also is the cheapest of all the new consoles, and it comes with one game right out of the box. you can purchase games from older systems (NES, sega genesis, etc.) online for as little as $5. just make sure you buy another controller so they can play together.

Well if you want a home console (as opposed to a handheld gaming system for you children) and you're looking at the previous generation of gaming systems I would lean more towards suggesting a Gamecube. The games that feature the likes of Mario, Pokemon and Donkey Kong, are more likely to appeal to your kids. Not to say that Playstation or XBox don't have likeable cuddly characters feature in games (Katamari Damacy comes to mind for the PS2), but I think that the Gamecube might have a library of games that might appeal more to kids of that age.
However, if you wait a few days, both Nintendo and Sony will be releasing their next generation of consoles. Sony's PS3 will launch on November 17, and Nintendo's Wii will launch on November 19. I am not sure what games will be launching with PS3 so I can't really speak on whether or not it will have games that will appeal to your kids.
I do know that when the Nintendo Wii launches on the 19th it will include Wii Sports in the box. It's a series of sports games that make use of the new Wii controller. Check out the link below to learn more about the Wii. I hope that helps.

Nintendo makes a lot of kid-friendly video games, though they're fun for anyone to play. They have excellent franchises such as Mario, Mega Man and Metroid and WarioWare and a parent could easily participate and have lots of fun.
If you're able, your kids would have fun with the Wii console that comes out on the 19th. Mostly because of the Virtual Control feature which will allow players to buy and download games from previous Nintendo consoles, which is a great conveniance and a true privilege since some titles (such as the Mario and Mega Man games) never get old.
Another solution is to focus on handhelds. Right now there's three options: Gameboy SP, Nintendo DS and the Playstation Portable (PSP). The PSP is more expensive and has more sophisticated features a child might not be interested in (such as browning the Web, watching movies and listening to music, and viewing pictures), and also the games are more complicated, but games like LocoRoco are very kid-friendly.
Gameboy SP and Nintendo DS have ports and originals of Nintendo franchises. Both handhelds are inexpensive and, like all Nintendo products, can take a beating should a frustrated player throw it across the room.
