Be careful that you do not confuse stereotypes with characteristics or personality traits. On the physical side of things, you may find that there are a inordinate number of Irish with red hair and white skin, but there are also those with dark brown hair with equally white skin - almost blue. My wife would argue that those of Irish heritage tend to have longer torsos than legs, which may have a genetic truth: the Irish are built for strength and climbing up those rocky hills may have had some influence on the evolution of their physique. There is also a notorious stubborn-ness that may be more legend than fact. The Irish are known for this trait, but are they any more so than any other race? As for temper, again, a convenient stereotype that is given dubious credibility by all those previously mentioned redheads. As for pugnaciousness, there may be a ring of truth to this partly due to the over millenia-long battle with the English (reaching the point of near complete extirpation by Elizabeth I) who had the uncanny knack of stealing Irish industry.
Hope this sheds some light on the subject...

Do you know all Irish people? Or all people of Irish descent? If not, how can you make such a gross statement as 'I know they are drinkers'? I am of Irish descent, not purely, but at least 1/2. I do not drink. A cousin of mine was killed last year at the age of 16 by a drunk driver who walked away with a sprained ankle. All charges were dropped!
But, to answer the rest of your question: Irish people have the same traits and attributes as anyone else in Europe. Most often, however, red hair, freckles, green eyes, and stubborn and opinionated seem to be at the top of the list for 'genuine' Irish traits.

Noone knows how to suffer like the Irish. They will tell foreigners, rather patronisingly, that the Irish soul is unique and impervious to analysis. They are friendly to outsiders but cut each others throats. Shrewd and underhand in their dealings, especially with foreigners. Experts at superficial morality and hidden perverted sexual practices

All Irish people are not drinkers. I am Irish and all of this Irish people are drunk stereotypes are really offensive. If you knew better and just googled Irish or Ireland you wouldn't have to ask this question and make that ignorant and offensive comment.

I also have irish descent in me. (I am 8 different nationalities), and one of the characteristics that my father told me that I have is the Irish temper. Irish is known to quick to temper, slow to calm down.
