People feel insecure because other people have put them down or treated them badly. After a lot of such abuse, they start to feel subconciously that they deserved the abuses, that there is something wrong with them, hence the insecurity.

I am going to answer this pertaining to relationships. My worst fear and biggest insecurity is of my girlfriend leaving me. She is my heart and soul and the thought of living without her is agonizing. I have a lot of theories as to WHY I am insecure about this and most of it is my own problem...my own fears. It's getting better and I have to maintain control of these fears because sometimes insecurities can seriously drive a wedge in a relationship! When I really get a grip on my fears and insecurities I know that come hell or high water we are solid and secure and Lord knows that girl loves me!!!

Like a lot of things it must stem from childhood and how you were raised. Someone who is put down by everyone around them for their entire formative years is going to be quite insecure about new people liking them and whatever.

It can take a long time to get over these things and make a real improvement to things.

Usually, these feelings are rooted in their childhood. They felt rejected by mother, father, both and/or an adult they looked up to & respected. They need to find their own worth as a human being. What are their good points? What skills do they have?

As you asked this under "Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and transgendered" may we assume you either mean people who fall under that heading or people who are intimidated by people who fall under that heading?

If the former - perhaps because of the reactions of people in the latter group. If the latter, because anything out of their comfort zone is unsettling.
