My son is 4 weeks old today and he has a rectal temp. of 100.2 He is eating normally. The only thing is that he wants me to hold him all the time he won't let me put him down. So should I be concerned about this temp. or wait to see if it goes to 100.4?

A fever is usually a sign of something wrong, and infection, chest infection, ear infection etc. Maybe your son does not feel well and is scared, and he needs you to comfort him, by holding him, but maybe try laying him down in the baby carriage and adjust it so he can see you, and wheel him around the house, wherever you go, that is what I did, since my daughter even when everything was fine want to be with me, no matter where.

But I think, just to be on the safe side, you should take your baby to the doctor during the day or hospital if it is at night. Good luck.

My baby was sick a lot between birth and 2.5 years old, but then she was in daycare and caught all kinds of flus and viruses etc. But by the time she turned 8-9 years old she wasn't getting sick anymore, or if she was she had built up her immunity and she got well sooner. I always measured my daughter's temperature under her arm, so I don't know if the rectal temperature is higher, naturally, or not.

Best take your baby to the doctor.

the ear and mouth and armpit ones dont work for babies.. ur thermomator might just be wrong .my peditrician told me that when u take a rectal temp, minus one afterwards.. so its a point lower then it is - apparently because thats the hottest place in the body. understandably.. anyway. so yea, he has a fever of 99.. not anything to be concerned about since it really isnt technically a fever. so, um yea... just hold him, treasure it, mine is almost 2 and i can never really hold him anymore he just wants to cruise.

Its not really high. For under 3 months a fever isnt a fever until it reaches 100.4. You can check out medical sites or google it for yourself.

My peditrician said that he wanted me to bring my daughter in for any type of fever until she reached the age of 3 months. She never got one thank God. He said that he normally keeps the child for a few hours to see what's going on and what is causing the fever.

Infant temperatures tend to fluctuate somewhat. If you think about it, his temperature is only 2 degrees higher than the normal body temp. and only about 1 degree higher for a rectal. He's fine for now but he might be coming down with something.

I agree with calling the doctor. Also if you have had visitors ask around if anyone has been feeling sickish. I'd stop visitors for a bit until he is running a temperature more like normal. Good luck and congrats.

Count his breathing. How many times a minute is he taking a breath. Then call your doctor! They have the answers. The know your baby. Sometimes babies do run fevers yes. But call to make sure your baby is ok.

Babies don't know to regulate their body temperatures when they are born, that is why they should always be kept wrapped up and warm. Having said that, I will suggest that you call your pediatrician immediately just to make sure. Hold him close and keep him warm. He will feel safe in your arms. Good Luck!!

it is nomal for children's temp to rise when they are sleeping..you should start to get concerned when the fever reaches 101 or to make yourself feel comfortable try some MOTRIN for infants...it works great as a fever reducer
