could this be a prediction of the BIG BANG/ BIG CRUNCH theory ?

" That Day We will fold up heaven like folding up the pages of a book. As We originated the first creation so We will regenerate it. It is a promise binding on Us. That is what We will do." (Qur'an, 21:104)

The Big Crunch theory proposes that the universe, that began expanding with the Big Bang, will collapse in on itself with increasing speed. According to the theory, this collapse of the universe will continue until the universe has lost all its mass and turned into a single point of infinite density.

There appears to be a birth and death cycle within galaxies, evidenced by the black holes found in the center of many of them, including our own.

I agree that the universe is expanding at the speed of light and will never fall in on itself. The literature you are quoting is like any other bible, it tries to explain thing that ancient man could not understand. Science has explained most of it away, but there are two theories on what will happen to the universe. One being that it will continue to expand to infinity, and the other is that there is a limit and then it will collapse.

Sure, it could be a prediction of the "Big Crunch." It could also mean almost anything else you want it to mean.

To my knowledge the previous respondents are correct that, even taking into account so-called "dark matter," the mass of the universe appears to be insufficient to cause an eventual contraction -- which bodes ill for the Big Crunch theory.

The "Big Crunch" theory is disproven by the observations of the observable universe...

Ancient Philosophy written by men who claim to be inspired by the divine can often be found to apply to any modern scientific theory.

These men were undoubtedly inspired and intelligent. It's not improbable to believe they came to thier conclusions with less science and more insite with the same general path as modern science... Just so, it's equally likely to believe that thier theories will prove to have as many wrongs as modern scientific theories have had on the path to true enlightenment and understanding the Universe...

The latest measurements indicate that the universe will never experience a big crunch. It is expanding too fast and is in fact accelerating; the expansion is speeding up and not slowing down, so it will expand forever.

In a word, no. Trying to equate the scienctific branches of cosmology, astrophysics, relativity, quantum theory, and high energy physics with religious text is like comparing an IBM mainframe to an abacus.

All measurements indicate that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate and will never fall back on itself.
