EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Nov. 13, 2006) -- Troy Aikman said Sunday he is "fifty-fifty" about whether or not he will end his retirement and play next season.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback called a report about a possible comeback "only speculation."

ESPN.com recently found out that Aikman told ESPN's Ron Jaworski that he would be interested in returning to the NFL next season but only if he could work with Joe Gibbs in Washington.

Aikman led Dallas to three Super Bowl titles in a 12 seasons before retiring in April 2001.

"I have said all along it's not something I have closed the door on," Aikman said. "If the right situation presented itself with the right offensive system, one that I believed in -- and Joe's is one I believe in -- then I would certainly consider it."

If Mario Lemeiux can return to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins, why not Aikman?

It simply comes down to a question of health and fitness, really. Based on his color commentary, I'd say his mental sharpness is still there, but what about the physical? Just how would he take a hit from Strahan next year?

I'm not sure why he would want to go to play for Gibbs, though...if he wants to win it all, anyway. If its strictly to help Gibbs and the 'Skins because he respects what they are doing, great...but if he wants SB #4, I'm thinking he'd be better off playing in Denver, Chicago or Carolina...good teams who could use a quality pivot that have good O-lines.

He could try.....but I figure he's too old and after 2 or 3 games he would be out injured and just be wasting the teams money......No team in their right mind should seriously consider him. He went out on a good note, he should leave well enough alone.

Maybe Steve Young will come back too so the 49ers will have a real QB.

I would love to see him back in uniform. He's one of the truly great quarterbacks of all time. Wouldn't that be something!!

He's aged...he won't be playing for long before he gets hurt.
