HMV stands for his masters voice. this comes from when the artist for the symbol recorded himself saying sit to his dog on a phonograph - Edison's invention. But the company sold records not wax cylinders so he changed it to a gramophone.

His Masters Voice. Used to be a record label. The dog was named Nipper, and he would sit by the gramophone and listen to his masters voice.
