No metal. I'm very open-minded, but metal is one of the exceptions to my musical taste. So is classical and techno.

Yutada Hikaru! She rocks! She's extremely popular in Japan, too. You should listen to the "Kingdom Hearts" soundtrack, she sings the songs for the game. So cool.

If you're into Indie/Rock music, Shonen Knife are a good band who've been round since the early 90s - they had a new album out in about 2003, though I can't remember its title. For the more traditional Japanese ballad, look up Noriko - she lives in England and produces her own albums of traditional Japanese Folk songs. She was also responsible for providing the vocal accompaniment for the 'Song For Japan' on some Daytime TV show like This Morning in the late 1990s.

You should try Megumi Hayashibara. She originally was a seiyuu doing anime voices and also songs. Then she started releasing full albums.
Her style is shibuyu-kei- a form of pop music which is very happy and quite bouncy.
