It is sooo common in babies. Don't feel bad about it! It's just an overgrowth of yeast. Yeast naturally grows in and on your body. Sometimes it goes a little crazy, usually because either you or your baby has been on antibiotics recently. The biggest concern is that it can be tricky to get rid of it.
Give her the meds religiously. If you are nursing her, make sure you treat yourself as well because you can spread it back and forth. If not, make sure you boil all the bottle nipples and pacifiers she uses to kill the yeast. Anything that comes in contact with her mouth needs to be cleaned with hot water---including spit rags, blankets, toys she might chew on. You can soak these items in diluted vinegar.
Look into home remedies, too. Natural food store sell acidophilus, which will help restore the balance of good bacteria in her body which keeps yeast levels normal. Gentian violet is another remedy to look into.
Again, don't beat yourself up over this. It is common and no indication of your skills as a mother.

My daughter had thrush...she had to take the medicine for a few weeks and it started to get better. I also had to treat my breasts because I am nursing. She is nine months old now and has never gotten it again. I am wondering why you feel like a bad mother over this. This is NOT your fault. You have no control over whether or not your baby gets thrush. Most babies contract it through the birth process. THe only fault of yours was giving birth! Which you obviously had to do! Do not blame yourself. It is unlikely that it is contagious to other children, unless they are sucking from the same bottle or nursing on you (not sure if you are nursing or bottle feeding). If you are nursing, make sure that you are also treating your breasts (because otherwise you and the baby will give it back and forth). My lactation consultant recommended applying lotrimin to my nipples after nursing for 4-6 weeks. It worked for me. If you are bottle feeding, make sure that you are sterilizing the bottles and nipples so that bacteria is killed and your baby doesnt get reinfected. Don't blame yourself.

Thrush is a yeast infection in the mouth. It is the exact same thing as a vaginal yeast infection. If you are breastfeeding you can get a ductal yeast infection in your milk ducts from your baby's mouth. Yes, it is contagious. Don't let your baby mouth toys that other kids might mouth or share pacifiers or bottles (I'm sure you wouldn't let your baby do that on purpose, but we can't watch them every second of the day.) My baby had thrush and she gave me the ductal yeast infection (OUCH). If you are breastfeeding you should also get on yeast medicine like diflucan so you don't trade it back and forth with your baby. The medicine they gave us for thrush was oral nystatin. It's a topical medicine, and once she swallowed it, it became useless. So, we were supposed to try to get it into her cheeks and under her lips to let it linger in her mouth as long as possible. My daughter took an inhaled steroid (flovent) for her breathing, and if we weren't diligent about rinsing out her mouth after giving her the medicine she could get thrush. AND you're not a bad mom because your baby got thrush. If she goes to daycare she could have gotten it from a toy or something or from taking antibiotics.

Both of my sons had thrush as babies within the first 2 months of life. I kept their bottles clean and washed, but both of them got it. My oldest boy is 4 years old, and my youngest if 4 months. My youngest son's doctor said it is very common for babies to have thrush.
After my oldest son finished his medicine he never got thrush again. My youngest son is clear of thrush now and has not had any more problems. I think once they had it and took the medicine their immune systems became stronger and so now their body can fight off the bacteria.
You're not a bad mom. Just keep the bottles clean and give her the medicine, she'll be better very soon.

My baby had thrush when he was an infant. I had to put the medicine in him as well and he hated it! I did feel bad, like I should have caught it earlier but the doctor said it wasn't anything big. He did say that if I was breastfeeding I had to be careful because we could be passing the thrush bacteria back and forth but it usually clears up just fine. The most important thing if that you caught it and took him to the doctor so she could get better.

It is very common for babies to get thrush. It does not mean your a bad mom at all, so stop thinking that. Both my children had thrush and it goes away. Its very common in formula fed babies to get thrush, over breast fed babies. Just use the medicine the Doctor gave you and that will clear it up.
Also be sure to boil your child's bottles/ nipples/ bottle ring/ bottle caps everyday for about 5 minutes, it will kill any bacteria in the bottle and keep your babies mouth thrush free! Good Luck :)

Hello. I had two of my children have thrush numerous times. Their pediatrician said that if the child is a baby and they pocket formula or breastmilk in their mouth they have a good chance of getting it since it builds bacteria quickly. You are not a bad mom, it happens to a lot of people. If your child is young and still on bottles or binkies you need to sterilize them as soon as she finishes with the bottle and not use the binky until it is cleareed up. Really there is no way to keep it from happening again. It is a difficult to not blame yourself. Hang in there.

If your baby having thrush makes you a bad mom, I should be stoned to death.
My four year old had thrush several times as a baby. Boil her bottles and pacifiers, don't let her suck on anyone's fingers but her own, and make everyone wash their hands before looking at your baby like they wanna pick her up or touch her. You're not a bad mom. You're human. Babies get sick, but with the love of mommy, and some good medicine, they'll get through it fine.

YES..And I can relate to your feelings very well too..Even though it has been quite a while ago...I can still remember how terrible the Dr. made me feel..The medication is very, very nasty and my daughter did not like it at all but it did eventually work..Note I said eventually..We fought this problem for what at the time seemed like FOREVER..Keep using the meds. you may even want to call the Dr. and see if he an give you something stronger..If I remember that is what we had to do..YES from what I was told it is contagious and we had to wash very carefully..Goodness I feel for you...It will not last forever and then the become teenagers.....Much, much scarier than thrush..lol...So try to relax and follow your doctors instructions..your child has a really good mommy and I wish you both much luck..

My daughter had it a few times when she was a baby. It is very common and you shouldnt blame yourself. I'm not sure how old she is, but if shes still drinking a bottle make sure you are boiling the bottles and nipples after washing them to help clear it up and to prevent it from returning. And yes it is contagious. Try going to webmd.com or babycenter.com it should answer any additional questions you have!
