As a child, I never realized how commercialized Christmas had become. As an adult, it is disheartening to know that many people do not celebrate Christmas for what it really means. Christmas means different things to different people and of course there are older traditions that reflect many of the practices today such as gift giving, putting up a tree, having a feast etc.. Of course to many Christians, it is the celebration of the birth of Christ. I believe these all reflect the true meaning of Christmas. It's just hard to keep it all in perspective because it has become so commercialized. Christmas to me is a sad time because I am away from my family, so I celebrate with my friends. It is also a happy time because I see many people give to those in need. I don't think that Christmas is the only time to help those in need, but it surely does perpetuate a good feeling in many during this holiday.

This question about Christmas is the most irritating question on Yahoo! Answers lately.
Of course it commercialized, but too commercialized...no. We live in America and there are many different kinds of people here. I, along with millions of others, love Christmas and love it when the stores start displaying Christmas things. There's a market for these things so the stores put them out there. How can anyone buy anything if it's not in the stores. Our economy has several events as well as just living that it depends on to stay strong. Christmas is huge. Our country needs Christmas, the people who work in our country need Christmas...it's not just about the stores...it's about the companies who make things for the stores, and the people who work for those companies and the suppliers who supply products for the companies...right down to raw materials. So to all of you people who think Christmas is "too commercialized" I say, walk on by those displays and suck it up for America.

The meaning of Christmas is still the same, but commerical business has commercialized its celebration. It is not even past Thanksgiving here in the states and most stores already have Christmas holiday decorations displayed. But, that is the job of "big-business"- to make the largest profit possible. It would be wrong to expect anything different from them.

In reality the commericalization of Christmas all depends on the way that an individual chooses to observe it. For my family it isn't too commericalized. We have set our own personal priorities. Yes, we still exchange gifts. But it is also a time of prayer, reflection, charity, feasting, and socializing with each other. Those are considered the most important aspects of the holiday for us.

I have heard people complain about this since I was a child, almost 30 years ago. And, I think people complained about this even before then. Look at the original "Miracle on 34th Street" made back in 1955, it made much the same point.

So, I think this is somewhat of a specious comment. How YOU celebrate is all that really matters. You can choose to give in to the commercialization, or ignore it all. (Personally, I think many of the same people who complain about this also are the ones driving the phenomena).

No, because each person has to pick and chose and focus on what aspects of any given holiday mean the most to THEM. If people want a big blow out, they can go to the mall and shop till they drop, or choose to make the holiday more meaningful and spirtual, a go the more low key route. That's the great thing about living in a democracy- you get to pick and choose, like at a giant buffet!

Yes it sure has.

The true meaning behind Christmas has lost a lot of meaning. Yes some people do still know the meaning but ask a smaller child and your answer might be "Its when santa brings all the toys" instead of "It was when Jesus was born"

All the kids care about is how many toys they will get. thats why parents have such hard time buying each year. they have to out due themselves year after year.

if a child didn't get the new tickle-me-elmo...look out..that child may hate you for some time.

Only if you let it. It cracks me up that people complain that it's gotten too commercialized and then get all bent out of shape that Walmart only said "Happy Holidays" last year. Then we have those same people who are the first in line on Black Friday or think that $100 is not enough to spend on little Tommy.

If the "kids" don't get whatever the true meaning is, who is to blame? It certainly isn't Walmart now is it?

No, Christmas never really had anything to do with Jesus so much as it did with making a "religious holiday" out of Pagan holidays. A pope decided it to be in Dec. to get people to stop celebrating Yule. One year, a pope decreed Christmas to be on 3 different days. The truth is, early Christians didn't celebrate his birth, only his death was important to them. Do a little research on it, it's pretty interesting. Every tradition that we associate with Christmas came from something else.

On somethings yes, but there is still some meaning, traditions left in Christmas. The fact that we take the time to be with our loved ones.

Nauseatingly so. I'm an Atheist but I was under the impression that christians were celebrating Christmas as the day that jesus was born. Commercialism at is very worst, people pushing and shoving for the latest toy, fistfights over parking spaces at the mall....this is how you celebrate your lord's birthday? Makes me want to throw-up (also makes me extremely glad to be an Atheist).
