I want to know if liberty cap large cents and draped busts are about the same size. I have a 1794 liberty cap and I just aquired a coin of an unknown date. The unknown coin is very eroded so I can't see much on it. However, it is about the same size as my liberty cap. I'm hoping that it is a liberty cap but it might just be a draped bust. Are those two coins the same size? Also, is there any other way to tell what I have?

Liberty Cap large cents have an approximate diameter of 29 mm and weighed 1793-1795 13.48 grams. The 1795-1796 had a thin planchet and weighed 10.89 grams. All were struck on some real poor planchets for our mint was very young then and had growing pains. Put it this way, if something could go wrong it usually did. Draped Bust large cents weighed the same as the 1795-1796 Liberty Cap, that is 10.89 grams. Their diameter was again approx. 29 mm but were closer to it. So as you see weights and diameters differed a little between the early large cents. You might find someone with a microscope, it may help in seeing the date. Copper coins are hard to clean, without causing more damage. Besides U.S. coins I collect ancient and medieval Chinese cash coins and they show up sometimes in real bad shape. I use olive oil on them. It takes a long time, but seems not to damage the coins. Hope this helps.
