Well, the next step would be a UV sterilizer. This is a device that water is pumperd threw and exposed to UV light to kill off the agle in your water which is makeing it green. Here is a link.

The problem is you are probably overfeeding and/or leaving the light on for too long every day. The uneaten food is decaying into ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. Nitrates is the food that the algae use to grow. A tank without live plants should only be lit when you are there to watch the fish. Fish don't need lights on their tanks.

An immediate fix would be to turn off the light and cover the tank completely for a week to ten days. No, it will not hurt the fish. Just remember to feed them. That will kill the algae for sure, it needs light to live and reproduce.

You could also start doing regular (weekly) partial (25-30%) water changes (you should be doing that anyway). That will lower the levels of those 3 chemicals I mentioned. Water changes are THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do to keep your tank and fish healthy and happy. Until the algae is gone, do the water changes every 3-4 days. That will lower the nitrate level significantly and inhibit the algae growth too.

A long term prevention, after you get the algae cleaned out, is to start keeping live plants in the tank. The live plants compete with the algae for the available nutrients in the water. The live plants always win in the long haul. The bigger the tank, the more live plants you will need, but they always make a tank look nicer.

I would completely drain it and use some algae stop chemicals (bought at local pet stores). Be sure that you clean each item that you put back in the aquarium also. Algae can attach to plants, plastic emblishments as well as the glass and rocks. Then treat the water too before putting the fish back in.

a good recommendation is to do a 20% water change each week until the water is crystal clear. GIVE IT A SHOT!!!

How much are you feeding your fish? Too much food will cause the tank to cloud. Also there are these cleaning tools called magni-float they allow you to clean the tank by use of magnets.(You don't have to get your hands wet!)
