I'm building a hot tub deck and I'd like to make it a step down from the entryway. In order to do this I need to attach a joist to the house foundation. Can I throughbolt it to the foundation? If so, what tools do I need to drill through the foundation and what diameter bolt would you recommend? Deck will be about 9 ft. by 15 ft.

If you are attaching the end of the joist to the foundation, it should be attached to a ledger board. A pressure treated board attached to the house with 6 by one half lag screw. Drill the holes in the foundation with a hammer drill. Put lead anchors in the holes. Drill holes in the ledger board to match the holes in the foundation. Attach with the lag screws. Use joist hangers to attach the joist to the ledger board. Make them sixteen on center to support the decking. Be sure to use washers with the lag screws.

If you have a cinderblock foundation you can mount it to it with butterfly bolts u drill through the outside of the block only not all the way through 1/2 masonary bit should do it, then the bolt goes through and as u tighten it it widens on the back side to secure it to the block. if you have concrete you will have to go all the way through with atleast a 9" bolt foundations usually 8 inches thick.

I used 8 inch by 1/2 lag-bolts. Then you don't need to go through your basement ceiling to put nuts on the bolts. Also use a hammer drill when you are drilling through the foundation.
