In Puritan times when a person committed adultry, they were made to wear a red (scarlet) letter A to show the community of their sin. There is a very good novel called the Scarlet Letter by Hawethorn.

Just what it sounds like: a red letter. In the colonial days, certain groups would punish those who broke the community's rules by forcing them to wear a scarlet letter so that everyone would know their sin. In "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the main character becomes a single mother and is forced to wear the letter A for adultery because she had a child out of wedlock, which is why most people nowadays know of that custom.

If you're referring to the book The Scarlet Letter, there was a lady who committed adultery and bore a daughter from the relationship. She was forced to wear a scarlet letter A on her chest to signify her as an adulteress.

The book is excellent. I think Demi Moore is in the movie version.

A Scarlett (Red) Letter is any letter with RED Coloring. In the Book by the same name, it was the letter "A", for Adulturess. The woman had to have this letter sewn onto her dress/clothes and wear it for a lengthy period of time.. But in time it also became to me the opposite, due to the character's good image that she was not just an adulturess, but also a good woman of good deed and a good mother.
