i have noticed it's very easy for folk to come up with strong positions on topics which they know very little about.

unsupported? try the whole immigration debate. the tide of mexican immigrants was created by NAFTA. yet like 90-98% of opinions on the matter... they don't even know what NAFTA is.

i mean that is by design but folks shouldn't be so gullible.

a friend of mine before the iraq war said something like 'i don't know what the hell is going on but all that (about WMDs etc),... that doesn't sound right".... this sort of honest opinion is rare

People, in my opinion, like to think, more like prove, they are very educated by giving out strong views on a topic no matter if they have little clue of what they are talking about. Take for instance, George W. Bush, when journalists asked about Tribal sovereignty. Bush clearly had no idea what he was talking about, but pretended as if he had the answer.

Check out this vid of what I'm talking about:

It's also very easy for folk to come up with non-questions based on nothing but an unsupported opinion.

I think it is because they are insecure. Some people cannot stand the thought of being wrong. People like this usually see most issues in a black and white way. Most others see a grey area to many issues. This causes a disconnect that worsens their insecurity.

Because, like religion, it's easier for people to follow someone else's line of thought rather than think and research things for themselves and become informed.

It's generally more difficult for people to think than to spew.

If you're speaking about Internet, then that's just the way it goes here - say any idiotic thing you like, they can't see you anyway.
Hate it too but you can't walk away from online idiots :(
