Because they have committed horrific crimes. They have demonstrated that they are not fit to live. There will always be issues as to who does & doesn't deserve this ultimate penalty. I think anyone who rapes and murders deserves death. Those who do this to children, I'll volunteer to throw the switch myself.

I used to be a staunch supporter of the death penalty. I'm wavering these days, and think an overhaul is overdue. I followed the story on the moratorium that took place in Illinois based on the following (info from Wiki)

"Since the death penalty was reinstated in Illinois in 1977, 12 Death Row inmates have been executed while 13 have been exonerated."

I know our justice system isn't fool proof, we all know that. It's a moral dilemma to say a few innocent people being put to death is all right because most of them are guilty. DNA has brought a whole new perspective to the justice system. I've been shocked at how many news reports I've seen about people released from death row because DNA evidence supported their innocence.

The upshot is that I believe the whole system needs to be reworked in the face of DNA, and that in the meantime the death penality should be in moratorium nationwide, not just in Illinois. It might be in the future that we cannot impose the death penalty without DNA proof. I'm sorry, but when I put myself in that position it makes my stomach turn over. I get arrested for a murder I didn't commit, and I get sentenced to the death penalty for it. How would any innocent person feel about that? I think that is the question we all have to ask ourselves these days. Don't get me wrong, I hold no love for murderers, and if we could be sure beyond any doubt that they did it, then I've got no problem with putting that needle in their arm. The system is too broken to do that with confidence any longer.

They serve no purpose in society. They made a choice to break the law, thus they should pay the price for that choice. It is about taking responsibility for your actions.

In August four men perpetrated a home invasion while the residents were holding a birthday party for their seven year old boy. These four scum bags shot and killed the mother and the birthday boy, then turned their guns on the rest of the children.
One child will never see again two have sever brain damage while a fourth is paralyzed.
I ask you. Should these dirt bags be given twenty years in one of our country club prisons? Given three meals a day, cable TV, prison jobs, conjugal visits, free health care etc etc? Or should we rid society of an ememy that prays on it.

tell you what when someone kills someone close to you by rapping them putting them in a car and lighting it on fire and watching them burn and then sit in court and laugh about it. You come ask me that question. These people have made the decision to end someones life. You think they care if they sit in jail the rest of their life. Most of the time thats better than they have before they are put in jail. I dont feel that I should be paying taxes to house someone who has made the conscious effort to destroy someone elses life. and for you who say they will reform. look up the stats an overwelming majority of people in jail are multiple offenders and even more majority of death row inmates are multiple killers. the stats are there look it up.

Cant see a reason why, other than a conservative rage.

The government having the power to kill is obscene and usually has disastorous results.

The state making one false kill is too much. It's not justice.
