Traditionally, being a Dallas Cowboy or a Detroit Lion results in getting shunned by both family and friends, so, come Thanksgiving, they got nothing better to do.

Tradition is the only reason I can think of. However, it's an idiotic one at that. As much as I like football on Thanksgiving, they should rotate the teams every year and go with flexible match ups so some of the games are more compelling. Let's face it, there is nothing compelling about being force-fed the Lions every year.

The Cowboys always play on Thanksgiving as part of a contract they have with the NFL.

Many years ago, the NFL wanted 2 teams to play on Thanksgiving Day but no one would agree to. So the Cowboys volunteered to play as long as they got exclusive rights to play on Thanksgiving forever.

detroit....I do not know.

Don't know about Dallas, but apparently the people of Detroit like being served turkey (in the form of the Lions) every year....

Even though i'm a cowboy fan, i would rather enjoy seeing a competetive game between 2 teams that are doing well and fighting for a championship. For example, this year, it would be nice to see bears vs. giants or seahawks vs. patriots/colts. You know, games that mean something and are worth watching.
