British Airways are great for long haul flights with babies. They reserved us bulkhead seats - loads of leg room and also they provided a sky cot or special car-seat type chair which fixes on the bulkhead wall securely so they're just infront of you. Also on two longhaul flights they booked us a free seat next to us which helped enormously. They will do this if at all possible. Check-in BA - we were ushered to the front of the queue! They obviously don't want stressed parents or babies!
There was actually so much going on sleep was ok - had milk and went down for sleep! Other passengers help with making the time go faster - entertaining your baby!
Honestly it was so much better than I'd ever imagined - your problems start at 3 years!

We took our daughter when she was 9.5mos to Rome from Boston. A 6hr flight. She slept on the way without the use of any medicines, just because it was her time to sleep (thank God) but on the return she was wide awake. We brought our laptop and played DVDs for her. She loved it and stayed quiet. As long as your 12mo old isn't walking yet this is a good trick. Also maybe an obvious tip but get a bulkhead seat. You can't stow anything in front but it gives you a little more room to maneuver when you need to change the baby. Nothing special needed for take off or landing except something to drink. She never made a peep as long as she was sucking on the bottle. Good Luck. PS the baby basket/cot they give you is not big enough for any baby bigger than 5-6 mo.

When you are taking off make sure that the baby has something in his mouth like a passifier or bottle because when you are up in the air your ears have to equalize the pressure and they will pop and sometimes it will be painful for your baby also use it when you are about ready to land. Your baby should sleep most of the way and a little tip never set your baby down er else there is a chance you'll forget him or he'll get kindnapped.

Children can sometimes have a latent ear infection, which flares up as soon as they get on the plane and results in them screaming the entire way because the altitude really hurts the ear. So take your child to the doctor a week before and get her checked out just to make sure there is no ear infection.
I know lots of people who have worried a lot about children and long distance flights, but afterwards they always say it wasn't as bad as they thought it would be!

HI with all young children you will have a few hiccups and sod the other passengers if they get annoyed.
bring things to keep baby amused, crayon are fun at that age, yes they scribble but it amuses them for hours. also suckers are good, get the suger free kind and just watch your baby with the stick. It takes them ages to get through it, stops your ears from popping (bring some for yourself) and keeps them amused for ages!!! bring a few familar toys with you if you can I don't know how much the laws have changed with carry on luggage. If baby gets cranky try walking them up and down the aisle to stretch their legs. Talk to baby lots and the sleep will come naturally.

not sure where Oz is, but give her some medicine for the pain that will most likely occur upon take-off and the landing. Try Benadryl and give him or her a sucker to suck on to alleviate the popping of the ears
Take some toys, juice cup (they can give you juice on the plane), books, teddy bear, how about a portable DVD player with a favorite movie or cartoon such as Little Einstein's.
Good luck

if you are serious then i suggest you either fly at night during bedtime or in the afternoon at nap time the loud noise from the airplane will lull them to sleep!!
DO NOT GIVE YOUR INFANT BENEDRYL!!!! WHAT ARE SOME PEOPLE THINKING GIVING BAD ADVISE LIKE THAT!
always bring toys or maybe even a new one to surprise the little one and keep them occupied for long.......snacks are a good idea also
