The book is the same as the film and the point of the end is you are not supposed to know. If you want him to be dead then he is and vice versa.

According to Wikipedia, this is what happens at the end of the book:

At the end of the story, Shane realizes that no matter how hard he tries to escape his gunslinging career and trying to be a farmer, he will never be able to dodge his fate and his true purpose in life. So, after personally eliminating Fletcher and his hired gunman, Stark Wilson, he leaves the town and the Starrett family in peace as he continues on in his gunslinging journey of life.

However, I've seen the movie, and I always thought we are supposed to believe he DOES die.

Great ending huh?..............lol...........I guess it's up to your imagination on whether he is dying or not or is already dead. One of the best movie endings ever.
