Thinkpad is one of the product lines made by IBM. Your question is sort of like asking "What is the difference between a Ford and a Car?"

In any case, my favorite notebook manufacturer is Toshiba. I have the Sattilite A100-SK4, although that's a Canadian model number.

Since there is a ton of difference in price and performance in laptopns, suggest you look at the site I linked to and choose one that suits your needs and budget.

I think you're a bit confused (as you should be) by all the branding going on for laptop/notebook pc's.
Laptops or notebooks are just that mobile PC's while the ThinkPad is the name of the laptops/notebooks that IBM used to build (the Think... is the ideea behind all their branding like ThinkCenter, and maibe even thinkdog, thinkcar, thinklamp :D).
Other examples of this are JoyBook (that's the name of Benq laptops) MacBook (laptops build by Apple) and so on.
The Thinkpad brand name has since been bought by Lenovo and they are now the people who are building Thinkpads.
My personal favorite (for now) is the the Aeria 51 Series Superman Returns Edition.

As for Toshiba: the Quosimo F10

Thinkpad is an IBM notebook.
The best quality laptops are made by Toshiba.

Well they are all right. A Thinkpad is just a brand name.

However, the brand hasn't been IBM in over a year.

It's now Lenovo.

A ThinkPad is a notebook, its just a particular brand and model of notebook.

I love my think pad and would buy one again. Looks to me as if people gravitate to the brands they buy and are familiar with.

I have a think pad G-40 and I would upgrade... my mom has a dell and really likes Dell

So look around and see what you like I'd take a bet that you will stick to the brands you know and trust...
