In most cases to-day, it would be OK to come out to your parents. However, kids are still being thrown out of their home by religious homophobic parents or an overly macho father who cannot accept a gay son. Don't cut off your nose to save your face. If you are young and you are fairly sure your parents may jump off the deep end and be unable to handle the news, you may be wise to go slow until you finish your education and are more self sufficient. As the years go by, they will begin to realize the truth themselves (specially your Mom, they nearly always know!!) and you may find it easier to broach the subject.

You may also want to have your parents get in touch with an organization called PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Every major city has such a group or you can look it up on the internet to find a branch close to your home. They do some amazing work to help parents accept their gay or lesbian child.

Every family unit is different and only you can know what to expect. Remember, the larger cities are full of young homeless gays who have to sell their bodies (and their self esteem) in order to survive. Don't be one of them. And good luck!!

It can be hard to do, but after you've done it, it's the most enormous relief, as long as they are loving and supportive.

If you are worried about how they'll react, try to prepare the ground first, rather than dropping a bombshell - e.g. mention that you're not into boys (I'm assuming you're a girl from your avatar), get into conversations about gay issues generally, so you can gauge their opinions and gently drop hints that they might pick up on.

Mine guessed ages before I told them!

It should be yes. All families are different & have different family dynamics going on. Hopefully you are a close family & they can & will accept this. Just know it may be a shock or surprise to them or maybe not. They may already have a suspicion.
Good Luck!!

why wouldn't it be okay? I would hope my kid would tell me - of course I also would hope I would figure that one out on my own. Are they gonna freak or what? Tell the person most likely to support you, then maybe tell the rest of family together. Good luck!

yes, if you can't trust your own family then you can not trust anybody. when i told my strict christian grandma that i was bi she was upset but she still accepted me as her granddaughter because she loves me regardless...nobody can tell you what you can or can't be because it's your opinion about life. and your family should always be there for you. but it helps to have close friends and if you're gay it helps to have friends of the opposite gender so you don't fall for them. but if you ever have a problem or questions about you sexuality email me and i promise to help you as soon as possible.

My family wouldn't have a problem, if that was so.
But real open mindedness is a rare thing.
