I know Test players only from the 1975 era. Therefore I shall pick my choicest Test team based on the last 30 years.
1. Sunil Gavaskar
2. Virender Sehwag
3. Rahul Dravid
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. Mohammed Azharuddin
6. Kapil Dev
7. Farokh Engineer
8. Anil Kumble
9. Javagal Srinath
10. Bedi/Prasanna/Zaheer Khan
11. B.S Chandrasekar
When playing an additional batsman, I would select GR Visvanath for number 5 and drop number 10.
If playing an additional batsman and an additional paceman, then B.S Chandrasekar would be the lone spinner in the team and Kumble's spot would go to Zaheer Khan.
Here's why I picked these men !
Openers:
Sunil Gavaskar
Virender Sehwag
There is no need to state why Gavaskar is picked. He would almost be present in a World XI team.
As for Sehwag, the closest competitors for him are Siddhu, Ravi Shastri, Chauhan and Srikkanth. I picked Sehwag because he has the best average. Moreover, he would be the perfect aggressor to Sunil's caution.
1 down:
Rahul Dravid
Just like Gavaskar, Dravid picks himself ahead of Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohinder Amarnath and VVS Laxman on sheer merit.
2 down:
Sachin Tendulkar.
Pretty much self explanatory here. Tendulkar's only real competitor is G R Vishvanath.
3 down:
Mohammed Azharuddin
Azhar narrowly beats a crowded choice of Saurav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Sanjay Manjrekar and Sandeep Patil.
4 down: (Playing an extra batsman)
G R Vishvanath can play ahead of Azhar when 6 pure batsman are picked.
4 down:
Kapil Dev
The all rounder slot goes to Kapil Dev without any real close competitors in sight.
5 down:
Farokh Engineer
Engineer pips Kirmani because Engineer is a better equipped batsman. Plus his experience in keeping against the spin quartet aids Engineer's choice over Kirmani.
6 down:
Anil Kumble
Kumble picks himself into the Indian team on sheer merit.
7 down:
Javagal Srinath.
Next to Kapil Dev, Srinath is India's best opening bowler.
8 down: (spin track)
Bedi/Prasanna
Depending on the opposition either Bedi or Prasanna may be included
8 down: (pace track)
Zaheer Khan.
Clearly there is a lack of a pace bowler of repute for the 3rd pacemen slot. Zaheer selects himself over Manoj Prabhakar/Venkatesh Prasad because Zaheer would be the only left arm seamer in this team.
9 down:
B.S. Chandrasekar
Arguably the greatest Indian spinner to win matches abroad.

there is a hell lot of players who got missed but still one would feel than in all time great teams we still lack PACERS
this is the batting order and an ideal team for test cricket as there are players who played less of ODI's

The Great Crickteer and now host
of different shows may be made the
Captain of Indian Cricket team.
HE IS NAVJYOT SINGH SIDDHU,
who has every answer for every
thing and should also be made the
Chief Selector.
Let that poet-*** joker *** orator
*** vulgerist *** harphan maula
select the team. He will give several
arguments for his selections and
best performance.
Live it to him, and let him decide.
