I known quite a few financially well-off folks. They don't vote Republican because they are afraid of the school choice platform they push. They don't want the poor, urban kids going to their kids' private schools under free vouchers. They say they sent their kids to private school just to get away from those kids and their families. Are all rich people like this?

have you been in an inner city public school classroom lately? There is no way a child that wants to learn has a chance with the majority of the kids not willing to learn. the lower class society refuses to address the problems of their children since "its the govts responsibility to raise my child" but the govt isnt allowed to do anything since "we have rights and they cant tell us what to do" So its a lose lose situation for public schools. If you have the ability to better your childs education and get them away from that you would. to just allow anybody to go where ever they want would spread this idea thoughout school systems would deminish education even more. If the lower class would put some effort in raising a child then maybe it would be different

School vouchers are mostly opposed by the teachers union. They do not want kids getting a good education anywhere but the public schools, although they are a dismal failure.

Private schools normally require better teaching credentials, testing teachers etc. The union knows most of their teachers are dumber than the students and son't want this fact known.

Same as unions have ruined most American businesses.

School vouchers has typically been a Republican plan.

Maybe you are confusing the rich with the liberal elite.

Republicans do not corner the market of rich people, and many middle class Americans are Republican.

All rich liberals are like this. Republicans want to see minorities succeed and want them to have opportunities denied them by the Democrats acting of behalf of the special interest teachers' unions. Conservatives see the high dropout rates and low achievement and think there's got to be a better way.

We are incredulous when cities (like Detroit) where the public school system is the shits, and they turn around and say 'No Thanks' when someone comes in and offers to spend a lot of money on new charter schools. It's like they're saying they are OK with the fact their children are losing their future. Excuse me?

Of course they are. Why would their kids benefit from hanging around with the poor folks?
Those well off people are probably newly rich. Probably inherited the money from their poor working class parents.
Have you heard the new Toby keith album, White trash with money?

Yes. I have rich and middle, and poor working class relatives. The rich ones act as if they are going to catch something from the poorer ones and do not associate with them. Sometimes the middle class ones can be almost as bad, but they are a little more sympathetic and will at least acknowledge them as relatives. My dad`s family has money, and he and my aunt and uncle are nothing alike. My dad is more down to earth and his brother and sister are a little snotty.

Most of what I know about it is lots of us are opposed because of the fear that more funds will be lost to the public schools who are already very short on funding. This is what I believe to be the biggest issue concerning the voucher program. Money has to come from higher taxes and most of us, me included are sick of it!

Most wealthy people want to send their kids to a school that has good teachers and environment so they can learn and be safe.
But I wouldn't think it's just the wealthy that wants this.

I don't know if all rich people are like that, but that's an interesting observation.
