It's a Dell Inspron 600m; origional dvd/cd combo drive. I'm also bulding my own pc. Are individual drives encoded for region or does it even matter?

You can choose the region a drive is set to, and change it afterwards - but you can only change it a limited number of times.

Also, some drives are 'region free' - so I'd just pop the disk in and see if it plays first, before you get into the region encoding settings.

i use VLC player ths program will play any region of dvd
u can download it free at http://www.videolan.org/
its a very nice program to use not a great interface but well worth using.
