I think it is because Gay people have their own preferences just like straight people do....just because someone is gay doesnt mean they have to jump the bandwagon and become a Dem....Im Dem and I wouldnt want them to join the Dem party just because Dems are in support of gay rights and Reps are not......maybe the other issues Reps bring to the table outweighs that one issue of gay rights.....however, I do see where you're coming from though......you'd think they would favor the party that makes things easier for them...go figure

Because any time you support a group, it's a package deal.

These Republicans still support the majority of their party platform. The fact that one particular issue may be at odds isn't reason enough for most to dump the entire party.

Just like Republicans can differ over contraception, or the right to display religious symbols on public property, and still agree with the rest of the Republican platform.

It's not all or nothing, despite what most fanatics say.

Not again. Ok. This is not a republican issue. There are numerous leading democrats who are against gay marriage including: John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Howard Dean and others. People have forgotten that it was democrat Bill Clinton that signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law. That law says:

No state (or other political subdivision within the United States) need recognize a marriage between persons of the same sex, even if the marriage was concluded or recognized in another state.

The Federal Government may not recognize same-sex or polygamous marriages for any purpose, even if concluded or recognized by one of the states.

The bill was passed by Congress by a vote of 85-14 in the Senate and a vote of 342-67 in the House of Representatives, and was signed by President Bill Clinton on September 21, 1996.

That means a whole lot of Democrats voted for this bill.

Most gay republicans (and there aren't many, that are out of the closet at least) agree with many of the economic and foreign-policy stands of the party despite their stance on gay issues. Many of them have said they hope to change the party's attitudes from within, which is why they stay.

I see nothing wrong with that -- the more diverse the republican party becomes, the better the changes that they'll tone down the rhetoric and start representing the opinions and feelings of *all* Americans instead of just middle-aged white guys :)

They can't control themselves or their behavior, but they know it's wrong. So they are willing to compromise on that issue to be in the party that is right on so many other issues. It's a trade-off.

The same reason as other Republicans - the hope for personal gain.
