I was trying to get my scanner to work with XP and i found someplace that you replace a file using regedit. Exactly how do you do this?? I'm supposed to start REGEDIT and search for umaxpcls.sys and replace it with ab306p.sys. Can someone explain the directions. I opened 'run' and typed regedit in there....is that the place to do it? HELP....

This is the site and explanation I got. My scanner is an older style for windows 95. It still works great, just not with XP. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I install the software like you're supposed to but it doesn't run with the XP operating system. I thought there was a way you can run a program under Windows 95 but have no clue right now how the guy did it when 95 games wouldn't work on XP.

Hi!

First, be ready to back up your registry...
Now: Start>Run>regedit
Go to File>Export type a name for the registry file, like : original, etc, etc etc and make sure that ALL is selected, not the Selected Branch...
Then, go to Edit>Find
In the dialog box, type umaxpcls.sys
The string umaxpcls.sys will, eventually, be found.
Now, replace the key (the value) with ab306p.sys.
Save your registry, if asked.
Make sure both files have the same path, so, copy ab306p.sys near umaxpcls.sys (in the same folder). You can find it by pressing F3 (or Find File) in Explorer.

Good luck!

Be very careful! REGEDIT is the most delicate tool in Windows and can cause IR-REPAIRABLE damage to the Operating System! That said, I think you are headed down a fairly techie path. Sounds like you've found a reference that tells you that a driver filename has changed and the REGEDIT is storing that filename for some reason. You could simply SEARCH for the name of the file (File... Find...) and then if found, double click on the old file name and replace with the new file name.

That said, it would be much better to simply uninstall the old scanner software and then reload the scanner kit from the manufacturer's website fresh. REGEDIT is the tool of last resort!

you have a umax scanner. that's your first problem. just relax and read the instructions. when people see registry they freak out. it's not that big of a deal. just follow the directions exactly as they are written if you are not comfortable editing the registry dont do it cause you can mess up your system pretty bad but if you are confident in your own abilities then just relax follow the instructions and do it. but yes start/run/regedit ..search for the correct key

Dont use regedit!! Go to C: drive to Windows folders(folder is hidden so you need to view hidden folders)(when you open the Windows folder click on the tools option on the top->folder options->view and check show hidden files) In Windows folder go to Driver Cache->go to i386 folder->go to driver.cab folder and there it is. Delete the one file and drop in the new one.

I dont think you need to do this but thats how to do it if you want. If the driver for your scanner is not working, try downloading a new one from website or try an older version of the driver.
