its an excellent career with good prospects and can even be done from home. there are always jobs available in accounts and u can earn very good money.
Ive just started an evening course at the local college studying the AAT. this is a recognised accounting qualification run by the accounting association. u can also study NVQ's in book keeping alone but would recommend this course as it covers all things accounts so u will know how to do everything!
the worlds ur oyster!

Inst of Book-Keepers, or you could try A.A.T. Assoc of Accountancy Technicians.
Qualifications usually require GCSE or above but you can progress through a foundation level which covers the GSCE's
The role is an acceptable professional role and in some places highly prized
No, not female dominated, or male dominated
Salary... as much as you think you can get ... but an average outside of London of about £18k
Up the ladder - CIMA/ACCA - Chartered Inst of Mangement Accountants / Assoc of Chartered Certified Accountants and if you're really good ACA Chartered Accountants
Hope this helps

Boring, boring. Become an accountant if you are interested in figures, the pay is better and you get to be a boss as a book keeper is lower on the ladder than an accountant. There are many professional qualifications, you can go to University to become an accountant (B.Com.), or C.I.S. (Chartered Institute of Secretaries) or CA (Chartered Accountant) or get the qualifications through your Regional College.
