I have one of those fireplaces with a gas log where you turn on the gas and hold a long match to the artificial log to light it. I am always terrified of incinerating myself (or at least singing some eyebrows). Where should I hold the match relative to the pile of fake logs? Also, do I need to hold the match up to the vent to get the flow of air up the chimney instead of down (as cold air tends to fall down when the flue is opened).

Yes, use the long fireplace matches or get a butane gas grill lighter (They work great for this.) to light your logs. Put the match down where the gas is being fed and then turn it on. As soon as the gas mixes with the oxygen in the air it will light without a big flash. For you other question, no you don't have to heat the chimney to get an air draft going. Gas burns so much cleaner than wood that it will heat the chimney before much toxic gases can be produced.

If you are using the long fireplace matches, you should not have a problem. To be safe, turn the gas on just a little bit.
