During the 80's there was probably more pot smoked than there is today. The main difference is the potency of what is available. I know that tends to be a common saying but im not talking about very small samples, Im referring to what is available overall. During the late 70's and early 80's hydroponics were just in their infancy for the pot world whereas today, there's 30 years of viable experience to use. I remember when I was in high school (81-85), we had a (tobacco) smoking lounge in the school for the students and there was regularly 3 or 4 bongs/bowls/joints being passed around between classes. Also, don't ask me how I know this but, there were at least 4 teachers in my school smoking on a regular schedule. This is just a view from a small east coast town, population at the time: about 7,500. Unfortunately, alot of what was available at the time was dirt weed otherwise known as commercial brown dope. Good green sticky weed (not homegrown leaves) was available if you knew the right people. Luckily, I knew the right people. I would honestly say that probably 30-40% of my senior class smoked frequently and another 30% did on occasion. We were pretty stoned. How else would you explain what was on the radio back then? Phil Collins? Duran Duran?? Granted, looking back, they were probably on the radio due to narcotic usage, not pot. There were things being played that you would have had to have been in a chemical coma to enjoy.
My preference was Iron Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, Zeppelin and other classic hard rock and early metal. My friends and I waited outside a record store for almost 4 hours once to buy Kill em All by Metallica when it was first released.
Another difference was back then, pot was much more of a social thing. The big legal push was to get rid of the coke and heroin. I was once let go by a state cop after he pulled myself and a friend over and found our half ounce in the glovebox. In a way, I miss those days but at the same time, im glad that the level of stupidity that that much pot smoking brought on is gone.

I smoked truckloads of pot in the 80's. Ahhh those were the days.....
Me and my other pothead friends listened to lots of Led Zeppelin, Bob Segar, ZZ Top, Pink Floyd, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Who, and many other groups that can still be heard on classic rock stations today. We also listened to some of the early metal like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, etc. The music was cool back then.
I'm not saying that its good to smoke pot, but I wish it was still the only drug we had to worry about people getting hooked on now. It was much less dangerous than cocaine, crystal meth, GHB, heroin, and other popular drugs that are out there these days.
Good luck with your paper. I hope this info helped you.

Seventies and the very early eighties. After a while, I just didn't enjoy it anymore, so I quit.
