Do you open it and discard it even though its a federal offense? or do you bring it back to the post office and tell them that you think they made a mistake? Or if its someone you know, do you bring it to them? Just curios as to what others do.

If it is someone you know you could take it to them and tell them postman made a mistake, otherwise take it back to the post office opening it and discarding is a federal offense

never open it at all .mail is just as private as you personal diary
if the peice of mail can be taken to the proper address by you, do it.
If you do not know the party the mail needs to go to,then take it to your post office, and inform them of the mistake.

I used to write
'NOT AT THIS ADDRESS - RETURN TO SENDER'.

That didn't work so I tried
'NO LONGER AT THIS ADDRESS - PLEASE STOP SENDING'

I even tried taking a bunch of mail around to the previous tenants new address and kindly asking them to contact the senders.

That also failed.

So now, after living here for six freaking years and still getting regular (we're talking daily here) mail for previous tenants, it now goes straight in the bin and I sleep very well at night thank you very much. lol

What you should do is write on it DELIVER TO PROPER ADDRESS and leave it for the post man to retrieve.

There is no reason that the addressee should be made to suffer for the errors of the carrier
