My tendency is to ignore the difference and treat them like anyone else, like there is nothing that sets them appart from others. But this seams to annoy some of them... and I'm looking for a different approach.

By different I mean people from another ethny, race or religion, gay people, people with AIDS or visible handicaps...

I work around people with physical handicaps every day. We are told NOT to ignore their handicaps. Ask questions if your curious and always offer a helping hand. If a person is in a wheelchair never talk from behind them, but sit eye-level to talk to them. Do not be shy, they know their situation.

Hi

People are very intuitive to others especially when there is a difference. When anyone is the "Odd Man" out they will become ultra sensitive to others. Maybe you are trying too hard and it is obvious to them( the people with differences), but not to you. May I suggest reflecting on these differences and figuring out how you really feel about them? People have this misconception that they should force themselves to do things they don't want to do and when they give in they actually resent the situation more. Treat people how you want to be treated.

keep on treating them the same, specially mentally handicap, they usually love it. if they get mad , well that's on them at least you did your job and treated them like any human being, wich they are only with different capacities. you are a kind person but sometimes people can be grumpy too and do not feel like being talked to. just talk to them like equals. most likely they will appreciate it

I think you are doing the right thing, unless someone is looking for attention, why would they want to be treated any different...

there should not be a different approach...you are doing what comes naturally to you...why would you want to change that?
