An estimate of personal merit is necessary to the common faculty of mankind, yet the aspiring efforts of genius or virtue are measured not so much by their real elevation but by the height to which they ascend above age or country....And thus the same stature that might go relatively unnoticed in a land of giants must appear all the more conspicuous to an age of pygmies!
Actually I read that in a book on the fall of the Roman Empire by Dreyden and later refuted it with the following:
You cannot expect the common lot to appreciate the values of thing they cannot comprehend!
