What do you mean by "to the rag?"

I assume that by "the rag" you mean the tampon. After all, ancient women had been using some form of "the rag" for eons. The tampon was invented in 1928 by Mathew Martin and was patented in 1931. It became available in the US in 1936.
Since that time the saying "on the rag" has crept into American slang to mean-on the rampage, on the war path.
