I replaced the refill tubing that leads to the overflow pipe and then I replaced the flapper(stopper). I did the dye test, tinting the water in the tank but it doesn't leak into the bowl. The tank keeps filling till it reaches over the top of the overflow pipe and then the water starts going into the bowl. This is a floatless ballcock toilet, made in 1985. There is no float ball or adjustable box. I have tried turning the knob on the valve at the bottom of the tank and that has no effect on the water level in the tank. I am at my wit's end. The only way it stops running is to turn off the water valve at the floor. Can anyone please tell me how to fix this without taking the tank off?

Most of your local hardware stores have replacement kits. You can take what information you have to a good hardware store and you can buy a kit for maybe ten bucks. Normally these kits have instructions on how to install/replace.

There is no need to consider taking the tank off, all work can be done either in the tank or under the tank.

Tools you might need: Cresent wrench, 6 or 8 inch adjustable, channel locks (sometimes called plumbers wrench)

Shut your water to the toliet off first then flush your toilet. Mop up the extra water in the tank. Follow the instructions on the box, a point is not to overtighten the fitting on the bottom on the tank.

It really isn't that hard.

There could be a huge number of causes for the problem, but here's a few things to check: 1) How much RAM do you have? If you don't have enough, your computer will constantly be trying to "catch up" to what you want it to do. 2) Have you deleted/uninstalled lots of programs lately? 3) When is the last time you put all your important documents/music/etc. on discs (or a separate hard drive) and reformatted your main HD? I've seen many people suggest you do this appx. once every 12-18 months--this will eliminate any excess "garbage" your computer has to read and decide to skip over while it's searching for something. 4) Has your power supply/source gone bad? Happened to me after a few years--the replacement was something like $55 and everything was back to running smoothly 5) Bad drivers? I had a problem where an updated driver for my video card caused it to slow down and sometimes freeze. I simply rolled back the driver and all was well again. If none of that seems to work, ask around; almost EVERYBODY has somebody they know who is "good with computers"...mine is my brother lol Good luck, and hopefully some of this helped!

You do not need to take the tank off to fix this problem......your fill valve (or ballcock) is what is causing it to run....go to home depot or lowe's and tell them you need a new fill valve for your toilet...dont get the cheapest one b/c remember you get what you pay for.....the most expensive one is probably no more than 10 bucks so get it! Turn the water off at the valve coming from the wall and disconnect the supply line from the toilet.....flush the toilet to allow most of the water to exit the tank then take a sponge and mop up the rest of the water from the tank.....remove the nut that holds the old fill valve and remove fill valve......when you put the new fill valve on make sure the rubber washer is placed around the threads of the fill valve before you put it into the tank....screw the new nut on firmly but not too tight....rule of thumb......screw it as tight as you can with your hand then about two turns with a crescent wrench or pliers....if you overtighten you may break the nut.....connect the supply line back up and turn the valve from the wall back on ........adjust water level according to the instructions of whatever valve you buy....good luck!!

If your not the home owner then you must contact your land lord and have him take care of it! You might end up having more problems than you initially started with..

A PLUMBER is a good start!
