The plant you refer to as the "parrot plant" is probably a variety of the busy lizy also known as Impatiens. It is a tender, short lived perennial plant and needs good light and warmth to thrive.

Although its yellow and red parrot beak shaped flowers are very attractive, the plant has a natural tendency to grow tall and leggy and so the growing point will need to be regularly nipped out.
These pieces can be propagated into new plants by carefully dangling them into a small glass of plain water and they should produce roots within a few weeks. Do not put the plants into too large a pot, and only use a quality potting compost such as Wilkinson own brand and try and avoid over watering them.
Keep them well fed by using a potash rich houseplant fertiliser throughout spring and summer. Avoid using too much fertiliser little and often is best.
