I LEAVE THEM SO THE BIRDS AND SQUIRRELS HAVE SOMETHING TO EAT

THEN I PULL THEM OUT IN THE SPRING. THE BIRDS ALSO LIKE PURPLE CONE FLOWER I DON'T DEAD HEAD THEM UNTIL SPRING EITHER.

ANOTHER IDEA MY KIDS LIKE TO TAKE THE SEEDS USE A RICE CAKE FROM THE STORE OR PINE CONES FROM THE GROUND COVER THEM WITH PEANUT BUTTER AND ROLL WITH SEEDS WE BUY ADDITIONAL SEED TOO AND HANG THEM ON THE TREE FOR THE BIRDS.THEY REALLY APPRECIATE HAVING FOOD IN THE WINTER.

KEEP A SOME TO PLANT NEXT YEAR!!

is it the plant that's almost dead? The way you asked, it's hard to tell.

birds and squirrels love sunflower seeds. Let the plant stand until the seeds are gone, then pull it out and plant another next year.
